Usually, at the start of a new year, we would be talking about an endless cycle of upcoming Star Wars and Marvel titles. However, both of the studios responsible for steering the helms of these box-office sagas appear to be opting instead to continue to support TV series and animated shows on streaming services like Disney+, with only four MCU titles scheduled for this year on the big screen, and no new Star Wars.
Many fans were starting to become weary of the sheer number of movies released each year, so perhaps the executives have listened and learned – the result of this gap in the usual heavy film schedule is that other franchises and stand-alone movies now have a chance to fill the void and attract a larger cinema-going audience.

Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Guide 2024
Dune: Part Two
Release date: 1st March 2024
Proudly carrying the torch for hard sci-fi and probably our most-anticipated release of the year, Dune: Part Two will arrive in cinemas in a matter of months. Based on the second half of Frank Herbert’s legendary and tome-length 1965 novel of the same name, the film will pick up where 2021’s first movie ended, when clairvoyant boy-king Paul Atreides and his mother, Lady Jessica, managed to escape betrayal from rival family the Harkonnens, before falling in with the desert-dwelling Fremen tribes.
David Villeneuve – who previously directed the brilliant Arrival – is known for his lengthy yet stunning movies, with a deep focus on cinematography, atmosphere, and conceptual design. The first Dune movie was one of the most alluring sci-fi films we have ever seen, and we’re hoping the sequel can live up to it.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Release date: 24th May 2024
Director Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set in the future following the original trilogy, which focused on the life of the revolutionary ape hero, Caeser. By now, the apes are the dominant species on Planet Earth, living together in relative harmony, while the humans are reduced to a feral existence.
During the new soft-reboot movie, a young ape goes on a journey that ultimately leads them to question everything they thought they knew about the planet and ape society’s past.
The ‘Caesar Trilogy’ was a thrilling realisation and reboot of the original 1968 Planet of the Apes, and we’re curious to see how this continuation of the story will turn out.
Deadpool 3
Release date: 3rd May 2024
We may not be getting the usual glut of MCU movies this year, but fans of the definitive anti-hero and cynical sword-spinner have plenty to look forward to in the as-of-yet untitled third Deadpool film coming out in May. Expect plenty of rude humour and crazy hijinks as Ryan Reynolds’ primary character teams up with fan-favourite Wolverine after taking early retirement to become a used car salesperson.
There are also strong rumours that pop sensation Taylor Swift will also be appearing in a surprise role!
Borderlands
Release date: 9th August 2024
This movie adaptation of the popular gaming franchise sees a group of ‘Vault Hunters’ travel to an alien planet called Pandora to find advanced alien technology. With actors including Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis and Bobby Lee onboard, this film promises to be a fun, wild ride.
Alien: Romulus
Release date: 16th August 2024
Does the world need another Alien movie? Legendary director Ridley Scott seems to think so, as he is returning to co-produce this latest offering in the long-running space horror saga. Fans have been lukewarm about the last few entries; nevertheless, they have been calling for a sequel to 2012’s Prometheus for over a decade, and it looks like their wishes have been answered, as the latest instalment is confirmed to be a Prometheus sequel.
Wicked Part 1
Release date: 27th November 2024
Wicked is the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history, and we’re excited to see what this stage-to-screen adaptation can offer. The confirmed cast includes pop star Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good Witch, which should lend the musical the required singing talent. Wicked expands on the classic story The Wizard of Oz to tell the story of a young Glenda and a green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who is destined to become The Wicked Witch of the East…
The War of the Rohirrim
Release date: 13th December 2024
This upcoming animated film production is set 261 years before the events of 2002’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, based on a story contained within series author J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices to the novels. Fans of the films will remember Gimli blowing the horn of the legendary Helm the Hammerhand during the battle for Helms Deep – this movie will focus on the same character when he was alive. Helm will be voiced by veteran actor Brian Cox, and Mirando Otto will also reprise her role as Eowyn, presumably to narrate or introduce the tale.
With the same conceptual design and style to match the legendary movie trilogy, this should be one to remember for the fans.
