Picture of Notre-Dame and LEGO version

Notre-Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris) is one of the most iconic landmarks in all of Europe, the first foundation stone was laid in 1163 by Pope Alexander III and the high altar was consecrated in 1189. By 1280 the nave, choir and western façade were completed and many more adornments were added over the next 100 years, including chapels and porches.

The cathedral was the idea of Maurice de Sully (bishop of Paris) who had the idea around 1160 of converting the ruins of two previous churches into one larger building. Much damage and destruction has befallen Notre-Dame over the centuries and it was lucky that it wasn’t damaged too badly during the war. Major restorations were made in the mid-19th Century by Eugene Emmanuel Viollet–le–Duc who was said to have been inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel "Notre-Dame de Paris". Unfortunately, a fire broke out in the cathedral attic in April 2019 and most of the roof and Viollet–le–Duc’s spire were decimated, but luckily the 13th-century rose windows survived. The cathedral is set to reopen on 8th December 2024 after having been heavily restored.
