Amazing Fan-Built LEGO MOCs – Part One
CHECK OUT THESE STUNNING FAN-MADE LEGO MY-OWN-CREATIONS
In between designing the latest display cases and stands for LEGO sets, we’re constantly browsing Reddit, LEGO forums and the LEGO community to see what the incredibly talented fanbase are building. Putting the latest official builds to one side, it is always gratifying to see so many customised MOCs springing from the imaginations of fans.
With so many franchises missing from the LEGO theme roster (Star Trek and Game of Thrones, we’re looking at you), it’s often up to LEGO builders to construct their own brick interpretations of their favourite films, games and TV series. And more often than not, sometimes fans just feel like creating something random that strikes an artistic chord with like-minded enthusiasts.
Join us for our new regular blog series as we look at some LEGO creations built by the fans. Many of these went on to be LEGO Ideas submissions, with the rest happy to remain in the online gallery…
Follow The Yellow Brick Road
We spotted this one on Flickr. User LEGO Monkey cleverly recreates the iconic shot from 1939’s classic musical fantasy movie, The Wizard of Oz, where Dorothy, The Tin Man, Scarecrow and The Cowardly Lion leave the spooky forest and spot the distant Emerald City. Using microscale elements for the fabled city intelligently creates a feeling of forced perspective, with the standard scale LEGO Minifigures in the foreground.
The original film was shot in vivid Technicolour, creating a saturated, colour-heavy effect. We think this LEGO MOC achieves the same fantasy effect, with sharply contrasting green grass and red flowers set beside the Yellow Brick Road in the centre. The choice of flat-surface LEGO bricks on the trees enhances the scene when viewed from the correct angle – this model would be perfect for displaying at home beside a movie collection.
Medieval Texture Madness
Ralf Langer has previously submitted some wonderful LEGO Ideas entries, not limited to the Lothlórien Riverside build for the Lord of the Rings challenge back in March 2023.
Another fantasy/medieval-themed model of theirs is the above cityscape, in which they imagine ‘a city that lost control’ before becoming a ‘dystopian nightmare in medieval appearance’. The brickwork on this build is nothing short of stunning, with intricate cracks and uneven bricks forming the grey towers, while above, a shambling mass of houses cling to the stone. The residences remind us of Tudor-style timber homes, as seen on famous landmarks such as High Bridge in Lincoln (UK).
Every facet of this design has been carefully thought out, with no easy or simple choices made – huge credit goes to the creator of this fantastic build for the work they put in.
The Lost Temple
This collaboration between ForlornEmpire and Mountain Hobbit would look great displayed beside the LEGO Indiana Jones Temple of the Golden Idol 77015 set. It is clear to see the influence that Raiders of the Lost Ark had on this ruined temple’s wild, overgrown jungle design, though we can see a lot of Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) and other games like Temple Run in there.
The square, boxy temple stone sections add a rich dark tan texture to the set, which is finely balanced with the use of green foliage elements on the trees and the light blue water below. There are plenty of fun hidden details to spot as well, including a parrot, treasure artefact, skeleton pieces and lotuses floating on the river.
The Wayfarer’s Den
With the summer proving to be such a damp squib over here in the UK, we might find ourselves dreaming of a warm winter tavern like this before long.
LittleJohn and soccerkid6 collaborated on this one to construct an inviting, fantasy-themed retreat in the mountains featuring a clever mesh of green and white foliage pieces to give the effect of landing snow on the trees. The building itself includes a snug stable for horses to the side and logs piled beside the grand wooden door, set inside a stone arch. The builders also used lighting to good effect, with illuminated windows to add ambience to the scene.
