SPOILER ALERT – This is a build review so if you want this LEGO GWP to be a surprise, read no further.
BUILD A BETTER PICTURE
This fun and festive LEGO Christmas Picture Frame set contains 209 pieces, neatly divided into four bags and three loose plates. There is one instruction book included, with a total of 65 steps to follow.
YOU’VE BEEN FRAMED
Bag one includes four curved green plates, two 6x8 plates and a selection of white and tan plates. These are combined to create the base for the frame. Two L-shaped grey pieces at the back will hold the frame in place.
Once the base has been constructed, we open bag two and more white pieces are added to create a snowy effect. Using the LEGO 6181319 pieces is a relatively common way to create snow effects with LEGO, but it works exceptionally well. The mini snowman cleverly uses three pieces with a top hat to finish it off.
After the snowy mound has been built, it’s time to create the cute festive micro builds. First up is the red and gold sleigh. This is constructed from eight pieces, combining 1x2s and 1x1 plates. The pile of gifts is topped off with a gold star. Using two gold 6335111 (gold bar 1 with plate 1x1 round) to create the attachment to the mini reindeer looks fantastic.
The micro reindeer is one of our favourite parts of this build; six small pieces to create such a cute little reindeer. We will definitely be remembering this section so we can make a whole team of these little festive guys!
A little fire is added, with a spare log (printed 1x1 circular tile). The following twelve pieces of bag two construct the micro gingerbread house. This is a clever use of hinges to create the pitched roof and four vibrant tiles to add the candy effect.
We construct the actual frame by moving onto bag three and the two loose 2x14 plates. The frame is eighteen studs by sixteen studs in size and is quite sturdy due to the four layers that it is comprised of. There are four dark grey plates with handles attached to the rear of the frame, and these have black modified 1x2 plates with horizontal clips attached to them. These sections are designed to help to hold the photograph in place.
Once the frame is completed, it’s time to open the final bag; this creates the corner adornment. This starts as two white pieces of foliage, then covered with several green pieces. A couple of gold stars are attached to add to the festive vibe. Each bell is crafted from six pieces, including a wand, onto which the other parts are slid.
Once both bells are completed, they are clipped onto the foliage and the whole section is attached to the two grey jumper plates in the corner of the frame. As this is mounted on a turntable, whichever way you choose to display your photo, the bells and foliage will sit perfectly at the top of the frame.
PHOTO FINISH
When we first saw the box, we thought it was okay - it was a cute little GWP, but nothing too exciting. Having finished building it, we absolutely love it. The micro builds are adorable and give it such a cute festive vibe. One of the pros is the frame can be positioned in a portrait or landscape position and allows you to easily add a 6x4" photo of your family, friends or favourite pet.
As mentioned earlier, we will be raiding our bricks and pieces to create more of these micro builds to add to our festive LEGO displays. LEGO 40702 will be a permanent feature in our future LEGO holiday display.
We hope you enjoy building the LEGO 40702 Christmas Picture Frame as much as we did.
Happy Holidays!
