LEGO Speed Champions are semi-accurate small-scale models of iconic racing and supercars with realistic detailing from existing brands, including Chevrolet, Porsche, Audi, and McLaren.
The theme was introduced on March 1st 2015 and seven sets were released that year, including LEGO 75912 Porsche 911 GT Finish Line and LEGO 75908 Ferrari 458 Italia GT2.
2016 saw the introduction of American Muscle cars into the theme, including:
- LEGO 75870 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
- LEGO 75871 Ford Mustang GT
- Ford Model A Hotrod included in LEGO set 75875
In 2017, the LEGO Speed Champions theme reverted back to Formula 1 cars, with releases from Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes. This included the Championship-Winning Mercedes AMG Petronas - LEGO 75883 Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
The LEGO 75884 1968 Ford Mustang was just one of the classic cars that arrived in 2018. Also, 2018 saw the release of the LEGO 75887 Porsche 919 Hybrid. This car holds the fastest lap record at the Nurburgring, with a time of 5:19:55 minutes.
2019 saw LEGO Speed Champions at the heart of the latest expansion in Forza Horizon (the open-world racing game), plus LEGO introduced Dodge and Mini to the theme with LEGO 75894 1967 Mini Cooper S Rally and 2018 MINI John Cooper Works Buggy and LEGO 75893 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and 1970 Dodge Charger R/T.
More iconic vehicles were released in 2020, such as LEGO 76899 Lamborghini Urus ST-X & Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO, and LEGO 76895 Ferrari F8 Tributo. There was quite a noticeable change in the construction, this being that the vehicles were now two studs wider than before, so the change in scale led naturally to a change in price.
Between 2020 and 2022, 18 LEGO Speed Champions models were released, including the most owned LEGO Speed Champions set, the LEGO 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5.
On the 28th of June 2023, LEGO 2K Drive was released, and this allowed us to drive the LEGO 1970s Dodge Charger RT and the LEGO Nissan Skyline GT-R (providing you have the Drive Pass for Season 1). In terms of tangible cars, LEGO Speed Champions released LEGO 76917 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) and LEGO 76915 Pagani Utopia, to name two of the six.
That brings us up to the present day, 2024. Nine sets have been released so far, but some are double packs, so that actually provides us with 14 vehicles in total. Included in these nine are:
- LEGO 76920 Ford Mustang Dark Horse Sports Car
- LEGO 76922 BMW M4 GT3 & BMW M Hybrid V8 Race Cars
- LEGO 76924 Mercedes-AMG G 63 & Mercedes-AMG SL 63
- LEGO 76925 Aston Martin Safety Car & AMR23
The grand total of LEGO Speed Champion sets released from the start is 64 (64 sets in nine years is good going!). LEGO Speed Champions is an awesome theme and adults and children alike can enjoy the build process and the aesthetics of them. We hope that LEGO keeps producing them at such a healthy rate.
