AERONAUTICAL ARTISTRY
Leonardo da Vinci's flying machine was one of the most pivotal points in aeronautical history; demonstrating how humans could fly using a wing-flapping aircraft. The design itself was only a concept after over 200 sketches were produced, but John Lichtenburg eventually built the model which now is displayed in the San Diego Air and Space Museum.
The team at LEGO have done a wonderful job at creating the flying machine in brick form. This steampunk-looking vessel has been designed with many realistic features, including:
- Flappable textile wings
- Multiple visible strings, hinges and pulleys
- An open airframe
- A Leonardo da Vinci LEGO Minifigure
Designed with AFOLs in mind, LEGO 10363 incorporates history and mindful building, making it a real must-have for those interested in science and history. The set also includes a black display stand to elevate the ornithopter.
The LEGO Minifigure of the great man himself does remind us a little of the LEGO Movie Vitruvius Minifigure (with the only exception that Leonardo da Vinci has trousers on and a slightly less jazzy beard! He features a quill and sketch, and there is space on the stand for him to be displayed with his innovative invention.
What are your thoughts on this brick-built slice of history? What other inventions do you think should be bricked?
