“Building Sensory Inclusive Experiences For Neurodivergent Fans”
People who suffer from a sensory processing need/invisible disability is on the rise. These are people who suffer from dementia, autism, PTSD, etc. Whereby these are not visible to the rest of the world, you may not realise that your neighbour, work colleague or friend suffers from one of these invisible needs.
KultureCity is the world’s leading non-profit organisation for sensory accessibility and acceptance/inclusion for those with sensory needs/invisible disabilities. They are dedicated to making venues more inclusive and have succeeded in certifying more than 1,800 venues and events worldwide.
While initially starting in the USA, KultureCity has now spread inclusive joy across five continents, making many people's Nevers possible.
KultureCity has many significant partnerships, but one of the most recent ones is with the LEGO group. It started with the LEGO House in Billund, and now every LEGO store in the USA and Canada is KultureCity Certified. KultureCity aims to bring this certification to LEGO stores in other countries soon, so keep an eye on their website or download the free app to find Sensory Inclusive places near you.
WHAT DOES KULTURECITY CERTIFIED MEAN?
This means staff members in that particular store have been trained to ensure that all visitors feel welcome and enjoy their experience. They are also trained to know that sensory needs vary drastically.
The certification also means that the store has Sensory Bags that can be handed out at no cost to the visitor. The Sensory Bags include:
- Noise-reducing headphones
- Fidget tools
- KultureCity branded lanyards
- Strobe reduction glasses
- Visual cue card
- Weighted lap pad
The bags are suitable for both children and adults. Some stores/venues may also offer a dedicated sensory room/area.
