JOIN US FOR AN EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEAK OF THE NEW LEGO MARVEL BLACK FRIDAY GWP
This year’s big new LEGO Black Friday set is Marvel Avengers Tower 76269, clocking in at 5,201 bricks and an impressive 31 minifigures.
LEGO Insiders members who purchase this mammoth new model over the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend (24th to 27th November 2023) will also receive a special gift with purchase – LEGO Marvel Taxi 5008076. Featuring minifigures of Black Panther, a taxi driver and two outriders, this fun add-on model is designed to be displayed as part of the more prominent Avengers Tower set, amplifying the scene with an added reference to the MCU movies.
We were lucky enough to be sent an advance copy of the new GWP from LEGO to preview and review. Check out the thoughts of our resident AFOL as they took some time to construct this early Christmas present…
LEGO Marvel Taxi 5008076 – First Impressions
Avengers Assemble! (Literally). This was a much smaller model to tackle than the previous gift-with-purchase sets provided by LEGO, with all the pieces in one bag. The booklet comes neatly packaged in the front of the box, doubling as a label. Unfortunately, however, it does not contain any extra lore or behind-the-scenes information like other GWPs from recent weeks.
The yellow NYC taxi is one of the most iconic city vehicles in the world, and I was intrigued to build this sleek-modern version.
LEGO Marvel Taxi 5008076 – Building The Model
First up – the LEGO Minifigures. This set contains the heroic Wakandan king, Black Panther, along with a humorously shocked taxi driver holding a pizza slice and a giant coffee (you don’t get much more NYC than that).
The driver has good reason to be shocked, as Black Panther uses their vehicle to hop after two outriders. Thanos used these genetically engineered parasite-assassins during the events of Avengers: Infinity War to devastating effect.
The Marvel car is built from the baseplate up, with familiar elements on show, such as the technic pins to hold the wheels in place.
There are some nice external decals used, all pre-applied to the LEGO bricks. These include number plates for the front and the rear, along with ‘Taxi’ text on either side of the vehicle.
Here, the car starts to take shape, with the steering wheel, a smooth front bonnet and headlights added.
The car interior has a few fun extra details, including the driver’s cap (branded with the Avenger’s ‘A’ logo) and a suitcase. The driver is clearly a big pizza fan, with another slice tossed beside the other accessories…
Applying the finishing touches to the yellow cab’s body – including two stylish window elements and a taxi sign on top.
And here’s one finished taxi with the wheels connected in place. The Black Panther attaches to the top using a transparent support element to give the impression he is leaping from the roof.
Final Thoughts
The Marvel Yellow Taxi Gift with Purchase is a neat add-on that will undoubtedly add some value to the large Avengers Tower on release, adding additional display options for collectors looking to recreate a scene from the MCU films.
Nevertheless, the cynic in us does wonder whether the car and minifigures shouldn’t have been included in the (already expensive) Avengers Tower set rather than being kept aside. It does feel a bit like when a game developer takes content from a title in order to repackage it as a DLC.
That said, the model is a stylish interpretation of the famous yellow NYC taxi and does include three minifigures, which is an impressive haul for a small GWP set.
