New Mars Rover LEGO Space Set Revealed

THE NASA MARS ROVER PERSEVERANCE REPLICA WILL HIT THE SURFACE OF MARS IN JUNE

Mars Rover LEGO Space Set

Space-themed LEGO sets have always proved popular with adult LEGO fans and collectors, with those based on real-world rockets, ships, and space stations proving no different. There’s something special about taking the time to reconstruct an iconic NASA ship in brick form while reflecting on the historical significance of the craft in question. These sets also provide a striking addition to any collector’s bedroom, turning their interiors into a stunning exhibition of space exploration history.

LEGO have now revealed their latest Technic model based on actual space missions – NASA Mars Rover Perseverance 42158. The new set will be available from 1st June 2023.

The NASA Perseverance Rover’s Mission

The real car-sized Mars Perseverance rover (nicknamed Percy) successfully landed on the surface of Mars in the Jezero crater on 18th February 2021 as part of the Mars 2020 mission alongside the robotic helicopter Ingenuity and other delivery systems.

The rover’s scientific objectives during its cycle on the red planet include searching for habitability (environments capable of supporting life), seeking biosignatures (signs of past microbial life), testing oxygen production (for future human travel), and caching rock and soil samples to increase our understanding of other planets.

You don’t get much better than that for the basis of a new science-worthy LEGO Technic set.

There are a lot of clever technical elements and details to be admired on the new LEGO NASA model. The set includes six specialised replicas of the rover’s Mars-friendly grip wheel tires and articulated suspension to support its movement across the uneven terrain. It also has a fully movable arm and 360° steering. Space enthusiasts will also spot the power unit, numerous cameras and scientific instruments, and an antenna.

The perseverance building project is more than just a model; it even comes with an augmented reality app experience technology so you can learn more about the Mars environment and the rover’s mission.

This epic new set certainly gets us thinking about display possibilities and the potential for a Mars-inspired printed backdrop and display case – stay tuned for more as we hit the space design labs!
