Our Favourite LEGO IDEAS Lord of the Rings Challenge Entries – Part Two

In our previous blog, we discussed the LEGO Ideas Lord of the Rings competition, where fans submitted their best brick-built efforts in the ‘location’ and ‘scene’ categories.

In this second part of our blog, we will look at the two winners in the ‘scene’ category, drawing attention to a few other entries we thought worthy of inclusion in the Middle Earth Hall of Fame…

Who Won the LEGO IDEAS Lord of the Rings Scene Challenge?

Jnj_bricks claimed the Grand Prize in this category for their stunning recreation of Gandalf’s arrival with Pippin at Minas Tirith in the film version of The Return of the King (pictured in our banner above). The clever use of perspective in this MOC makes it seem that the minifigure Gandalf riding on Shadowfax is approaching a much larger city in the far distance, which is, in reality, a micro-scale build.

The runners-up prize went to IsleOfHeather for their rendition of Gollum And The Forgotten Pool (also pictured in our banner above), a reimagining of the scene where Gollum catches a fish in the hidden basin guarding the entrance to Henneth Annûn, the hiding place of the Rangers of Ithilien.

Wizard Battle In Orthanc

“Tell me, friend, when did Saruman The Wise abandon reason for madness?”

One of our favourite MOCs was Stardust Brick’s LEGO brick version of the epic wizard duel at the tower of Isengard between Gandalf The Grey and Saruman The White (of Many Colours in the books).

The Fellowship of the Ring movie presents the interiors of Orthanc as an imposing, black, cathedral-like chamber with rows of sharp, bladed decals on the walls. This creative brick interpretation achieves this effect using swords, spikes, claws, crows, and eggshell elements. It would have been a nice touch to see the Saruman minifigure holding Gandalf’s staff in his other hand (as per the film) but this is still a neatly contained scene with some fantastic background detail on display.

A Long-Expected Party

There’s a lot to smile at in this fun-filled Lord of the Rings LEGO diorama from ponuryy, who chose to construct Bilbo’s 111^th birthday party celebration in the Shire. Named after the LOTR trilogy’s opening chapter, the LEGO scene shows the Hobbits enjoying a party filled with music, fireworks, good food and plenty of ale.

Eagle-eyed fans will spot some familiar shots from the film, including the jaunty rural folk band on stage, Sam Gamgee dancing with Rosie Cotton, a pair of Hobbits cooking with a pot, and a giant birthday cake set beside the feasting revellers. Our favourite inclusion is Merry and Pippin, looking up at the huge firework dragon they have just launched with comical, shocked expressions.

Forth Éorlingas!

This epic scene from Brickwood Creations represents Éomer and Gandalf the White’s climactic charge against the Uruk-Hai orcs attacking Helms Deep at the end of The Two Towers. We love how the Rohirrim cavalry look like they are charging out of the One Ring-shaped background, which includes a name tag as a nice added touch.

Smaug Smells A Thief

It’s not easy to pack the scale of the treasure halls of Erebor and the gargantuan fire-breathing dragon Smaug into one compact diorama, but YellowheadDan88 neatly achieves this with this stunning my-own-creation.

This LEGO fan build recreates the famous scene between Smaug and Bilbo Baggins, where the two characters converse before Bilbo attempts to flee. Clever details on the model include the bending, damaged architecture and scattered golden treasures.

Treebeard And The Last March Of The Ents

We cannot fault this movie-accurate LEGO build of Treebeard attacking the tower of Orthanc at the end of The Two Towers. MicheMoche uses an impressive selection of brown LEGO brick elements to realise the walking tree’s body, with a neat use of green foliage for the beard and added details. This scene is instantly recognisable, thanks to the Ent’s battle pose (with a rock clutched in his hand) and the addition of Merry and Pippin riding on his back.
