Any new LEGO Batmobile set is a reason to celebrate, but you have to move like a bat out of hell to get your hands on one when it's first released.
LEGO Batman: The Classic TV Series Batmobile 76328 is based on the Caped Crusader's car from the 1966 TV show and includes a 50cm version of the vehicle, a matching LEGO Batman Minifigure and a rooftop gargoyle for him to stand on.
If you missed out on the LEGO Classic Batmobile when it dropped on October 1st 2024, you should find it's now back in stock - so what's the verdict on Adam West's iconic set of wheels?
A Brief History of the Classic TV Series Batmobile
The 1966 Batmobile is one of the most iconic vehicles of all time. But when Batman made his debut in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939, the character originally drove an ordinary red car.
The name 'Batmobile' was first used in Detective Comics #48 in February 1941, and by then Bruce Wayne's car was a souped-up automobile with a dark exterior and a bat ornament on the hood. When the 1960s TV series entered development, George Barris modified a Lincoln Futura concept car with a glossy black paint job and 2.1-metre tail fins, and a legend was born.
First Impressions
At first glance, this set looks like an excellent, authentic attempt to recreate the look of the 1966 Batmobile, with its moulded 'bubble' windshields and those long, sweeping tail fins.
The size and scale of the set are good, especially if you're a keen collector of 'hero' LEGO Batman vehicles. Here's how it measures up alongside some of the LEGO Batmobiles from other eras:
- LEGO Batman: Classic TV Series Batmobile 76328: 50cm x 18cm x 14cm
- LEGO 1989 Batmobile 76139: 60cm x 22cm x 12cm
- LEGO Batmobile Tumbler 76240: 45cm x 25cm x 16cm
Another thing you'll notice is there are a LOT of stickers when it comes to detailing the finished build. Some of these need to be aligned perfectly for the model to look right, so this set really deserves its 18+ age rating.
Best Features
Let's start with the good points - and there's plenty. With over 1,800 pieces, this is a fun build. All those stickers mean that once it's done, it's a highly detailed display model. That accuracy is important and it's evident from the overall look of the vehicle, right down to some of the finer points. Open the trunk to reveal the Bat-Computer, complete with a label that reads "Mobile Crime Computer".
Buttons and levers are labelled too, just like in the TV show. A personal favourite is the "Emergency Bat-Turn Lever" on the passenger side of the 1966 Batmobile's cockpit. It's the kind of silly addition that made audiences love the original vehicle, and it's so good to see it included in this LEGO set.
Design Flaws
With all of that said, there are a few flaws that let down the design of the car, and the set as a whole.
The official description promises "movable wheels for dynamic style" but despite the scale of the model, there's no working steering. Bruce is gonna need that Emergency Bat-Turn Lever if he wants to turn any corners because the wheels can only point straight ahead.
It's a sign of the lack of features and functions in this build. As a display piece, it's fantastic. It looks exactly like the original TV Batmobile, with enough of the heart and soul of the 1966 design. But it's definitely not a toy, and interactive play is extremely limited.
One of the biggest bugbears among Batman fans is the absence of a Robin Minifigure. The TV series in particular saw Batman and Robin fight crime as a duo, but in this set, you only get Batman without his sidekick. A Robin (and perhaps an Alfred Minifigure?) would have made a big difference.
Final Score
Customer reviews of LEGO Batman: The Classic TV Series Batmobile 76328 fall into two groups: those who love it except for a few flaws, and those who feel let down by it.
If you prefer interactive play-set LEGO builds, you might be disappointed by the non-functional steering, the lack of sidekick and villain Minifigures, and the fact that the supplied Batman Minifigure doesn't fit in the driver's seat.
But if you're an experienced LEGO builder, you're looking for a 'UCS' Batmobile to put on display, and you have a steady hand when applying stickers, you'll likely love this set. The aesthetics are spot-on and are honestly helped by all those stuck-on graphics.
The scale is suitable for display alongside the other eras' LEGO Batmobiles and with a vehicle information plaque to place in front of the car, you'll be able to see stats like its length, width, acceleration and top speed at a glance.
Putting it all together and allowing for those few design flaws, this is still a fantastic, iconic build, earning a respectable final score of –
8/10
